Kilburn House, Manchester University

Whilst hosting school visits to the Kilburn building the University of Manchester raised safety concerns over the existing steel balustrade to the main staircase.

Calibre metalwork were asked to propose designs to provide a building reg compliant solution with a modern twist.

Working with our structural engineer the design team decided on a proprietary fixed glass support channel fixed along the edge of the concrete staircase to optimise the limited stair width.

A toughened glass balustrade was installed, with radiused corners and polished edges.

A continuous stainless steel handrail was installed centrally along the top edge of the glass balustrade and was extend horizontally beyond the top and bottom nosing of the staircase to offer support to disabled users.

The finished handrail balustrade provides additional stair width over the original steel balustrade and offers a greater degree of safety to all users.

The original steel handrail balustrade was outdated and no longer compliant with current building regulations or guidelines set out in the Disability Discrimination Act 2005.

A contemporary solution was proposed by our design team using a side fixed glass support channel; ideal for use along the edge of the concrete staircase maximising the available space.
