St Marys School, Hinckley

Two of the school’s original cast iron windows were in a poor condition where a lack of maintenance had allowed corrosion to take a hold. Their opening lights were seized with heavy corrosion and old paints/sealers. Careless painting over the years had reduced the light entering the hall where paint had covered much of the glass. The client asked us to restore them to their original condition and reglaze them.

Their opening lights were seized with heavy corrosion and old paints/sealers. Careless painting over the years had reduced the light entering the hall where paint had covered much of the glass.

We restored both windows off-site, removing the old glass remnants and putty by hand, then removing all paint and corrosion by careful use of dry blast cleaning. We then inspected the windows and found many breaks and fractures in the cast iron frames. We made good all the broken glazing bars and replaced a small section of missing ones, then repaired the hinges and replaced the catches.

Our team re-glazed both windows with 3mm thick restoration grade clear glass and re-installed the windows into the original openings prior to brickwork repairs being carried out by the client.

The school's two original cast iron windows were complete, but in desperate need of restoration.

Their opening lights were seized and no longer weathertight. The school had fitted perspex covers to offer protection from vandals, but this had discoloured over the years and become incredibly brittle. It was decided not to reintroduce them.
