Thornton Stocks, Liverpool

The stocks and sundial are Grade II listed monuments and date back to the late 18th century. They are a much loved landmark in Thornton and have recently received a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund enabling them to be conserved with the minimum of intervention.

Years of neglect and a vehicular accident during the blackout in WW2 had left the stocks in a poor condition with many breaks and missing parts.

We were asked to carefully remove the loose cast iron parts and stabilise them with the minimum of intervention. Removing the old finishes and corrosion to the cast iron elements of the stocks and bench and to refurbish the surrounding modern railings.

Vehicular damage in a WW2 blackout is reputed to be the reason for the cracked seat and stock castings.
